Méribel

Based in the thick of things in the famous Three Valleys, Méribel is a major draw for intermediate skiers. On top of that, you’ve got a smashing set of snow parks, plus cross-country zones and mogul fields that’ll keep snowboarders happy. The final icing on the cake? The rocking après-ski in the centre of town! When you aren’t taking on the playground that is Méribel, why not hop on a lift and make the most of the wider area? French architecture, saunas and pizzerias are also in the mix here and there’s a winter sports heritage you’re bound to want to learn all about too.

Les Menuires

It’s true, Les Menuires gives you the key to the Three Valleys area. Its network of slopes and facilities are well connected by lifts, so you can hop on and hop off exactly when you fancy it. While it’s got a handful of more daring pistes and moguls, prepare to have a smorgasbord of beginner and mid-level slopes at your disposal. Honing your skills couldn’t be simpler here. And when all’s said and done, you can’t beat relaxing in a sauna, hitting the lively bars or even sitting down to a flick in the cinema – it’s all on offer in this town.

Courchevel

Courchevel puts some stunning routes right on your doorstep and it’s pretty accommodating for beginners. Each of its four villages has a unique atmosphere to suit different types of skiers, whether you’re a pro on the snow or you’ve never tried out the sport. The area known as 1550 is fab for families, while glam 1850 is lined with hip boutiques and lavish hotels. Courchevel is also part of the acclaimed Three Valleys network, which means you’ll have your run of north-facing pistes and lifts that get you from A to B.

Chamonix

Among the legendary European skiing areas of all time is Chamonix, an ice-white wilderness of varied slopes and exciting après-ski options. And just when you thought that sounded incredible enough, we’ll tell you summit else… it’s home to the mighty Mont Blanc. You might not be a pro, but there are terrain parks if you fancy having a go. You’ll also come across a whole host of other winter sports to check out. Budget-friendly cafés, classic French restaurants and chic bars call for nights on the tiles, but when you want to up the ante, see what’s on the calendar because this place is known for its festivals!

Avoriaz
Astonishing Avoriaz is a fun choice for freestylers, but it has stacks for newbies and intermediates as well. This purpose-built resort has been engineered with all ages in mind, so you can head away with the gang or organise a family break. When you aren’t on the slopes or trying out the half-pipes, experience more of the Portes du Soleil area. Why not potter around the architectural gems in town and book a journey on one of the local horse-drawn sleigh taxis later? They’re quirky alright!
